Ingredients

  • 4 pieces chopped boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 4 tablespoons corn starch
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cups broccoli florets
  • 6 tablespoons honey
  • 4 tablespoons ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • sesame seeds for garnish

Equipment

  • Chef's Knife
  • Whisk
  • Wooden Spoon
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Frying Pan
  • Skillet

Method

  1. In a large resealable bag, combine 4 chopped boneless skinless chicken breasts and 4 tablespoons corn starch. Seal the bag and shake it gently until the chicken pieces are well-coated. This step is crucial for achieving a crisp outer layer when cooked.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together 6 tablespoons honey, 4 tablespoons ketchup, 3 tablespoons granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon brown sugar, 2 tablespoons white vinegar, 3 tablespoons soy sauce, and 1 teaspoon garlic powder. This sauce will be your flavor bomb, so ensure it’s mixed thoroughly before setting it aside.
  3. Next, heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once the oil is shimmering, add the coated chicken from the bag. Cook for about 5 to 6 minutes, turning occasionally until the chicken pieces are golden brown and cooked through.
  4. After the chicken is nicely browned, toss in 2 cups broccoli florets. Immediately pour the prepared sauce over the chicken and broccoli. Stir well to coat everyone in that delicious sauce.
  5. Let everything cook for an additional 4 to 5 minutes, continuing to stir occasionally. The broccoli should be vibrant and tender, and the chicken should be fully cooked, reaching an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
  6. While the chicken and broccoli are cooking, grab a small bowl and mix together 2 tablespoons cornstarch and 2 tablespoons cold water. This mixture is key for thickening your sauce to a perfect consistency.
  7. Once the chicken and broccoli have cooked through, stir in the cornstarch mixture into the skillet. Continue stirring as the sauce thickens, which should take about 1 to 2 minutes. Be sure to watch closely to avoid burning.
  8. Once the sauce has reached your desired thickness, remove the skillet from heat. Finally, sprinkle some sesame seeds over the top as a garnish for a lovely finishing touch.
  9. Serve your delicious Skillet Sesame Chicken Broccoli immediately, either on its own or over cooked rice or noodles for a more filling meal. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Storage: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stovetop.
  • Freezing: You can freeze this dish, but it’s best to do so without the broccoli. Cook and cool the chicken and sauce, then freeze. When ready to eat, thaw and add freshly steamed broccoli.
  • Pairing: Serve with steamed rice or noodles to soak up the savory sauce. This dish also pairs wonderfully with a side salad.
  • Spicy Option: For a kick, add red pepper flakes or sriracha sauce to the sauce mix for a spicy twist.
  • Vegetarian Version: Substitute the chicken with tofu for a vegetarian-friendly option. Ensure to press and cube the tofu for best results.
  • Herbs and Spices: Feel free to experiment with adding herbs like cilantro or green onions for extra flavor and garnish.
