Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Salted Butter at room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons Grated Orange Zest
  • 1/8 teaspoon Salt
  • 1 large Pasteurized Egg Yolk
  • 16 ounces Powdered Sugar
  • 1/4 cup Freshly Squeezed Orange Juice

Equipment

  • Grater
  • Mixing Bowl

Method

  1. In a medium mixing bowl, use an electric mixer to combine the butter, orange zest, salt, and egg yolk. Beat this mixture on medium speed until it’s light and fluffy, approximately three to five minutes. You’ll notice the color lightening and the texture becoming creamy.
  2. Next, gradually add in the powdered sugar, one cup at a time. Alternate by adding the orange juice in small increments. This method ensures that the frosting achieves the right consistency without becoming too runny.
  3. As you mix, constantly scrape the sides of the bowl to ensure everything is well combined. Continue beating until the frosting reaches a spreadable or piping consistency. It should look smooth and have a slightly glossy finish.
  4. If the frosting seems too thick, you can add a little more orange juice to loosen it up. Conversely, if it’s too thin, add more powdered sugar until you reach your desired consistency.
  5. Finally, taste your creation! This is the moment to adjust the flavor if necessary. You can add a bit more orange zest or juice to suit your preference. Once you are satisfied, your Orange Buttercream Frosting is ready to be used!

Notes

  • Tip 1: Using pasteurized egg yolks minimizes the risk associated with raw eggs, making your frosting safer.
  • Tip 2: Store leftover frosting in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It can last up to two weeks.
  • Tip 3: You can freeze this frosting for up to three months. Thaw it overnight in the refrigerator before using.
  • Tip 4: Try adding different citrus zests, like lemon or lime, for a refreshing twist.
  • Tip 5: This frosting pairs beautifully with chocolate, vanilla, or even spice cake. Explore the possibilities!
